As a nutritionist, one of the most common things I hear from clients isn’t, “I think my gut needs help.” Instead, they tell me they’re constantly bloated, tired by mid-afternoon, craving sugar, struggling with constipation, dealing with brain fog or wondering why they simply don’t feel like themselves anymore. The interesting part is that these symptoms don’t always begin in the gut. Sometimes they show up as low energy, poor concentration, skin concerns, stubborn weight gain, inflammation, or simply feeling “heavy” every day. Because these changes happen gradually, many people start believing it’s just part of getting older or living a busy life.

I’ve learned over the years that our bodies are incredibly intelligent. They rarely surprise us overnight. More often, they send us subtle signals long before something feels seriously wrong. The question is, are we listening?
That’s why I wanted to dedicate this week’s newsletter to a topic I feel incredibly passionate about: supporting the gut through gentle, sustainable detoxification. Not crash diets. Not expensive supplements. Not starvation cleanses. Just simple habits that help your body do what it was naturally designed to do.

What Does “Detox” Really Mean?
The word detox has become one of the most misunderstood terms in nutrition. Many people immediately think of juice cleanses, expensive powders or surviving on liquids for a week. A true holistic detox is very different. Your body already has an incredible detoxification system. Every day, your liver, digestive system, kidneys, skin and lungs work together to process and eliminate waste products. The goal isn’t to “make” your body detox—it’s already doing that every single day. The goal is to reduce the burden on your system while giving it the nutrients and support it needs to function at its best. Think of a holistic detox as an opportunity to press the reset button on your daily habits. By nourishing your body with whole foods, improving hydration and supporting healthy digestion, you’re creating an environment where your body’s own detoxification systems can work more efficiently.

Signs Your Gut May Be Asking for a Reset
Your body often whispers before it shouts. You may notice:

  • Frequent bloating.
  • Constipation or irregular bowel movements.
  • Brain fog.
  • Afternoon fatigue.
  • Sugar cravings.
  • Feeling heavy after meals.
  • Skin breakouts.
  • Poor concentration.
  • Low energy.
  • Feeling generally sluggish.

These symptoms don’t automatically mean you need a detox, and persistent symptoms should always be discussed with your healthcare provider. However, they are often your body’s way of asking for a little more support and attention.

Why Consider a Holistic Detox?
Over the years, one pattern has stood out in my practice. Many people don’t realize how much better they can actually feel until they begin supporting their digestive system consistently. A gentle holistic detox isn’t about deprivation or quick weight loss. It’s about giving your digestive system a break from highly processed foods and replacing them with nutrient-dense foods that help your body function the way it was designed to. When clients complete a guided detox, they commonly notice:

  • Reduced bloating.
  • More regular bowel movements.
  • Increased energy.
  • Better mental clarity.
  • Fewer sugar cravings.
  • Feeling lighter after meals.
  • Better hydration habits.
  • Improved sleep.
  • Greater awareness of how different foods affect their body.

Simple Ways to Support Your Gut
You don’t have to overhaul your entire lifestyle overnight. In my experience, it’s the consistent daily habits—not the perfect ones—that create lasting change.

Eat More Plant Diversity
Your gut bacteria thrive on variety. Aim to include as many different plant foods as possible throughout the week. Try adding:
Leafy greens.
Colourful vegetables.
Berries.
Herbs.
Legumes.
Nuts and seeds.
Whole grains, if tolerated.

Increase Fibre Gradually
Fibre helps nourish beneficial gut bacteria while supporting healthy digestion and regular bowel movements. Remember if you cannot tolerate raw vegetables/ produce, then eat grilled/ steamed/ cooked veggies for less colon irritation. Not everyone can tolerate raw fibre.
Good choices include:
Oats.
Lentils.
Beans.
Chia seeds.
Flaxseeds.
Apples.
Pears.
Berries.

Include Fermented & Prebiotic Foods
Fermented foods provide beneficial bacteria, while prebiotic foods feed the healthy bacteria already living in your gut. Consider including:
Plain yogurt with live cultures (Greek yoghurt is excellent)
Kefir.
Sauerkraut.
Kimchi.
Garlic.
Onions.
Leeks.
Asparagus.
Bananas.

Stay Well Hydrated
Hydration supports digestion, nutrient absorption and healthy bowel movements.
Simple habits include:
Starting your day with a large glass of water. Try warm lemon water on an empty stomach; it helps balance the gut PH.
Adding fresh lemon if you enjoy it.
Drinking water consistently throughout the day.
Replacing electrolytes after prolonged exercise or excessive sweating when appropriate.

Slow Down at Mealtimes
Your digestive system works best when you’re relaxed.
Sit down while eating.
Chew your food thoroughly.
Minimize distractions during meals.
Give your body time to digest before eating again.
