Motivation is what drives us to make the things happen – but staying motivated isn’t always easy. Get some tips on how to become (and stay!) motivated, and suggestions for what to do if you just can’t get into gear.
The truth is, getting motivated is easy. But staying motivated, even under the best possible circumstances, is hard. More than 90 percent of people who set out to make a resolution this year will fail. Except you! Not this time. From goal setting, time management, and planning, to practicing self-compassion, here are some quick and easy to apply motivational tips!
This can help if:
- you want to figure out your goals and learn how to achieve them
- you’re feeling unmotivated
- you want to get stuff done.
- Positive and negative motivation
Motivation is what drives you towards a goal, gets you up in the morning, and keeps you working through a task, determined to succeed when things get tough. But motivation can be both positive and negative:
Positive motivations focus on the positive things that will happen when you take action. For example: ‘Finishing this assignment means I’m only a step away from being qualified.’
Negative motivations focus on the negative backlash that will occur if you don’t take action. For example: ‘If I don’t finish this assignment in the next few hours, I’ll fail my course.’
Negative and positive motivations can both be effective in different circumstances. However, it’s much easier to do something because you actually want to, rather than because you want to avoid a particular outcome if you don’t do it. If you don’t have a positive plan of action, using negative motivation can make you feel helpless and may even reduce your motivation.
Daily tips for staying motivated:
SET REALISTIC GOALS FOR THE TIME YOU HAVE
If you set yourself too much to do at any given time, then usually you will end up feeling deflated by the end of it because you can’t possibly get it all done, but you feel like you should have.
GET THINGS NOTICED
Keeping your home looking great and living your day to day life filled with chores can be a really thankless task. The family may not be that quick to notice all the things that you do for them.
FOCUS ON ONE THING AT A TIME
It’s really difficult to motivate yourself when you feel overwhelmed at how much stuff there is to do.
MAKE YOUR GOAL PUBLIC
If you tell someone – or write down – your goal, you’ve essentially made a promise to keep your word.
USE QUOTES TO INSPIRE
I love reading quotes for motivation and inspiration – and if you are a regular reader you’ll know that I publish ones that I love quite frequently.
ONE GOAL AT A TIME- FEELING OVERWHELMED?
One Goal. Whenever I’ve been in a slump, I’ve discovered that it’s often because I have too much going on in my life. I’m trying to do too much. And it saps my energy and motivation. It’s probably the most common mistake that people make: they try to take on too much, try to accomplish too many goals at once. You cannot maintain energy and focus (the two most important things in accomplishing a goal) if you are trying to do two or more goals at once. It’s not possible — I’ve tried it many times. You have to choose one goal, for now, and focus on it completely
PLOT YOUR PROGRESS
When you’re working towards something, it can be really motivating if you can see evidence that you’re making progress. Use rewards. Promise yourself some sort of reward each time you complete a step/task.
Getting motivated can be one of the most difficult things in the world at times, but some simple tricks can really help keep you focused and get things done. I wish you all the very best of luck in getting motivated, and I’d love to know how you get on with these tips, so please let me know in the comments below – thanks in advance.
